How to Make THC Gummies
Posted by Christian on 26th Apr 2023
In the era of legal recreational marijuana, no edibles have seen their stock rise like gummies. These tasty, bite-sized candies are a convenient and discreet way to dose and surprisingly easy to make. Let’s explore how to make THC gummies!
This gummy-making guide is for everyone. Don’t worry if weed isn’t legal in your area – I will be sharing recipes for delta-8 and delta-10 gummies, too. These hemp-derived THC isomers have been a revelation for those living in prohibited states!
Let’s begin with a brief overview of making gummies, before introducing the different types of THC you can rustle up these edibles with!
The Quick Answer
THC gummies are made with decarboxylated cannabis flower, coconut oil, an emulsifier (e.g., sunflower lecithin), flavored and unflavored gelatin (or a vegan alternative), and cold water.
You can substitute cannabis-infused coconut oil for cannabutter. For delta-8 and delta-10 gummies, use the appropriate tincture oil instead of cannabis flower. Sweeten the gummies with corn syrup, honey, or any other invert sugar.
What is THC?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most abundant psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. THC typically refers to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the most common type of THC, but the cannabinoid has several isomers, including delta-8 and delta-10.
THC is active in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) as a CB1 and CB2 receptor partial agonist. It is THC’s engagement with the former that makes you “high,” an experience that involves euphoria, heightened senses, the munchies, and more!
Before we get into making gummies, let’s discuss the differences between THC isomers. You cannot make a perfect THC gummy if you don’t have the right type of THC! Check out this comparison table for THC, delta-8, and delta-10.

What is hemp-derived delta-9?
If you live in a state where marijuana is recreationally legal, lucky you! But if you don’t, hemp-derived delta-9 is here to save the day.
Per the 2018 Agriculture Improvement Act (Farm Bill), federally legal hemp products can contain up to 0.3% THC. Once considered a strict threshold, the hemp industry now uses the law to its benefit with hemp-derived delta-9 gummies!
It’s possible to make Farm Bill-compliant edibles with more than adequate THC servings. For instance, a 2-gram gummy could legally have around 6.7mg THC, which is more than you would get in some edibles sold in marijuana dispensaries.
What is delta-8?
Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive THC isomer. It’s more energizing than delta-9 but less intoxicating. Delta-8 doesn’t get you as stoned, but it’s less likely to trigger side effects.
Delta-8 was the first mind-altering, hemp-derived cannabinoid to make waves in the hemp industry. The THC isomer is naturally occurring in marijuana but only found in minuscule amounts. However, chemists can make delta-8 from natural CBD.
Critics claim that lab-processed delta-8 products violate the 2018 Farm Bill, at least in spirit. And more than 20 states have banned delta-8 in response to the emergence of these products. But we haven’t yet seen such action from the federal government.
What is delta-10?
Delta-10 is a less psychoactive alternative to delta-8 and delta-9, making it perfect if you are new to edibles or prefer milder highs. It's the least well-known of the three, but an excellent addition to the hemp market.
Like delta-8, cannabis plants produce barely any delta-10 molecules for natural extraction. That leaves us in the hands of the chemists and their complex cannabinoid conversions.
How to Make THC Gummies
The following recipes apply to classic delta-9-THC gummies made with decarboxylated cannabis flower. If you want to make delta-8 or delta-10 gummies, substitute the flower for a delta-8 or delta-10 tincture oil.
How to Make THC Gummies with Cannabutter
Before we can make the gummies, we must make the cannabutter! I should warn you that this can get rather smelly, so making cannabutter from scratch may not be possible if you need to keep your cannabis escapades lowkey.
Cannabutter is a portmanteau of cannabis butter and an essential ingredient for anyone looking to dabble with THC edibles. You can purchase ready-made cannabutter from a dispensary but it’s cheaper to make it yourself. Let’s see how.
- Grind your favorite cannabis flower in a hand grinder
- Preheat your oven to 250ºF (121ºC) – this will transform the THCa into psychoactive THC without destroying the cannabinoids
- Put the ground marijuana on an oven-safe, non-stick tray and bake for 30 minutes – you could place the flower on parchment paper to stop it sticking
Once you have decarbed your weed, it’s time to make the cannabutter.
You will need:
- Decarbed cannabis flower (the strain of your choice)
- 1 cup of unsalted butter
- 1 cup of water
- A pot
- 2 bowls
- Cheesecloth (wire sieve or coffee filters are acceptable backups)
- A rubber band
And the process:
- Add water and unsalted butter to the pot
- Melt the mixture on low heat
- Add decarbed cannabis flower and cover with a lid
- Simmer the mixture for three hours on the lowest heat, stirring occasionally
- Fit cheesecloth to the bowl with a rubber band
- Slowly pour in the melted cannabutter mixture to filter out the flower
- Decant the cannabutter into another bowl and let it cool to room temperature
- Refrigerate the cannabutter so it can fully solidify
Cannabutter is an all-time favorite, but some savvy users have since switched to cannabis coconut oil for their edible purposes. Coconut oil is teeming with MCTs, fatty acids that enhance THC’s bioavailability and psychoactive properties!

How to make THC gummies with corn syrup
If the traditional THC gummy recipe isn’t sweet enough for you, consider adding corn syrup, honey or any invert sugar, or another sweetening ingredient. This also helps the gummies retain a soft and chewy texture – all the candy brands do it!
Why Make THC Gummies
With so many awesome companies making delicious THC gummies, why go through the hassle of buying the necessary equipment and ingredients and creating your own?
You control the dosage
Rather than limit yourself to the dosage whims of the manufacturer, take matters into your own hands! Maybe you are extremely sensitive to psychoactive substances and only want mild and mellow effects. Or perhaps you are chasing crazy THC highs.
With homemade THC gummies, the ball is in your court. Don’t forget to take delta-8 and delta-10’s lower strength into account if making edibles with these cannabinoids.
You decide the ingredients
Have you ever scanned an edible product’s ingredient list and seen obscure terms like “artificial flavorings”? Who knows what some brands put into their gummies and especially those that don’t have the decency to provide third-party lab results.
By making THC gummies from scratch, every ingredient you consume will be with your knowledge and consent. That makes for a safer experience, and you can also get creative and add ingredients that you think would complement THC.
Why not?
You don’t need a specific reason. Making THC gummies is fun and, dare I say it, educational! Knowing how to make cannabis-infused edibles is a cool party trick, too – your friends will be impressed when you tell them they are tripping on your supply!
How to Store THC Gummies
Store homemade THC gummies in an airtight container or a resealable food-grade pouch. You don’t want your cannabis treats going stale or losing potency due to cannabinoid oxidation!
Keep your edibles away from direct sunlight and in a cool, dry place – a refrigerator, ideally! Gelatin gummies melt at around 95ºF (35ºC), which could be room temperature in some hot locations.
Melted THC gummies are more a nuisance than a disaster. They will still get you stoned, but they will merge and mess up the serving sizes. That could lead to inconsistent edible highs, with some too potent and others not strong enough.
