7 fun things to do while you're high

Posted by Christian on 9th Aug 2021

We spend a lot of time talking about the health benefits of cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD), which is THC free. And without a doubt, there are many therapeutic reasons for taking this remarkable plant. But there is another purpose for taking marijuana, and one that has been popular for years, and has a rich history: recreational use.

Many people love weed and the THC compounds within it, simply because it gets them high. It’s a freedom that millions of people around the world are now able to embrace thanks to legalization. The change of consciousness that comes with getting ‘high’ can be a lot of fun. For a few hours, the user gets to experience an enhanced version of reality. And while getting stoned and trippy isn’t something to do all the time, used sparingly, marijuana can be a great treat to enjoy, both alone or with friends.

This post will cover seven things to do while you’re high, with particular focus on the following:

  • The joy of listening to music

  • Watching a movie or great TV series

  • Eating fantastic food

  • Playing intense video games with friends

  • Relaxing and enjoying meaningful, deep conversations

And, of course, we’ll talk about which type of strain will help you to get the most out of each experience.

Listen to music

Putting your headphones on, zoning out and listening to some great tunes is a great way of keeping your mood up and enjoying yourself when stoned. There is actually a long history of the psychoactive experience being used to enhance music, dating back to the Ancient Sufis. Not to mention, music and weed were a huge part of the hippie counterculture movement that swept the West in the 1960s.

There isn’t much scientific research to draw on when trying to explain why THC makes listening to music that much better. Short-term memory tends to take a hit when ‘baked’, and believe it or not, this is helpful when listening to music. You aren’t left focussing on what’s just gone, or what music might be played next. Cannabis does make it easier to stay in the moment, so that you can give your undivided attention to a song - whether it’s rap, hip-hop, pop or even something classical. It seems that the effect that marijuana has on sound perception are emotionally beneficial.

Listening to music can be really pleasurable in its own right. And in the right setting, marijuana has exactly the same uplifting effect. So we shouldn’t be shocked that when the two are combined, those wonderful sensations are taken to another level entirely.

The science behind listening to music while high

Interestingly, some researchers believe that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) may have a role to play in why weed makes music sound better. There is clearly something in the chemistry of cannabis that can spark creativity. When ‘high’, it’s common to get drawn into something and become temporarily obsessed - or shall we say ‘fixated’ - on it. In the case of cannabis and music, that could happen when listening to an amazing track. Further on this concept, a study has shown that THC is implicated in visual and auditory processing.

There’s much more to be discovered about the effects of listening to music after smoking a joint. For now, all we can say for sure is that it’s pretty beautiful and incredible. A hybrid strain may be just right for an extended music session. You’ll get a nice cerebral effect, and some relaxation, too, so you can space out and let the rest of the world fall away, if only for a short time.

Watch a movie or TV series

Never have we had so much entertainment at our fingertips, with the likes of Hulu and Netflix giving us a huge library of movies and TV shows for a low cost. Whether it’s an action film, a romantic movie, a family flick, or the sort of cartoon you may have watched as a kid, it’s all there just a couple of clicks away. And when you’re baked, it’s even better.

Since smoking a joint will get you high for around three hours, this is perfect if you want to settle down and watch a great movie. If you’re with mates, then something funny that will have you laughing until your stomach hurts is probably what you’re looking for. However, if you’re on your own, you could take the opportunity to watch something deeper that will get your mind thinking. Cannabis can really help to open the mind, and if you are in need of a fresh creative drive, an artistic, well-crafted movie could give your brain that new lease of life.

Then there are TV series, which are perfect if you want to settle in for a long weed session. That box-set you need to binge? Spark up a joint or chomp down an edible, and then settle down and let the show commence. You’ll probably want an indica if planning to chill out on the sofa for a few hours.

Eat fantastic food

Cannabis heightens all of the sensations and that includes taste. So, what better time to indulge in some of the best food that you can get your hands on. Weed smoking may be associated with pigging out on fast food, and unhealthy snacks. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and with a bit of preparation beforehand, there’s no reason why you can’t rustle up some delicious meals that don’t just taste great, but are good for you, too!

If you do want to try this, then make sure that you have all the ingredients you need before you smoke, and that you get all of the preparation and cooking done before you light up. It’s perhaps not the best idea to be messing around with ovens and hobs when you’re stoned! But providing you get everything in the right order, then when you do settle down to eat, it’ll taste even better than it does normally! We suggest a sativa to really bring out the flavors in whatever it is you’re eating.

Have deep conversations

If you like to smoke with others, then this can be a wonderful time to have deep conversations. Perhaps you like to get deep with a significant other or your best friend. Meaningful and natural connections can be very powerful, and not to mention very interesting when talking with open-minded people. But where does cannabis come into things?

THC sends the frontal cortex part of the brain into overdrive, allowing for new neural pathways to be formed. This is what brings about all those unusual and often brilliant thoughts when you’re high. It also supercharges your train of thought and can send you off in some pretty bizarre mental directions. And when you’re with a stoned friends, that’s two brains levelling up for a short time, making great conversation a guarantee.

As sativas are renowned for improving creativity levels and having a desirable cerebral effect, strains like Girl Scout Cookies and Super Lemon Haze are just what you need when you want a deep chat.

Meditate

Cannabis and psychedelics are sometimes referred to as a shortcut to enlightenment. Long-time meditation practice is certainly one way to get there, according to Buddhist teachings. But is there any way that meditation and marijuana use can be combined to make for a positive experience? Some suggest yes.

One thing that nobody doubts cannabis does is bring you into the present moment. This is absolutely key when you close your eyes and meditate. Studies have found that meditation is beneficial for health. It can also help to make a person more empathetic. Some also say the same about cannabis and similar drugs, commenting that it helps to open the mind and introduce them to new perspectives.

Whether weed is helpful for meditation probably depends on how you react to it. THC can make some people more anxious, which may in turn make meditation anxiety-inducing, too, especially if you’re doing it in a group. Others, however, may feel more relaxed with lower inhibitions after taking some THC. If intending to try marijuana while meditating, a hybrid that marries the sedative effects of an indica and the cerebral properties of a sativa may be just the ticket. A strain with some CBD could also work well if weed is prone to triggering your anxiety.  You can buy our CBD flower right here.

Play video games

Have friends that you love to play video games with? Smoking some weed in the process can help to intensify those gaming sessions and really make things serious. Maybe you play Xbox or PS4, or perhaps you prefer the old-school Nintendo consoles. The great thing about playing games when you’re high is that a competitive edge can be added to pretty much anything.

Unless you and your friends are hardcore gamers and you know everything about the game you’re playing, it’s best to keep things fairly simple. Mario games are perfect, as are other party games. Cannabis can also be great when playing games on your own. And it's particularly good for the complex strategic games which move slowly and require your full attention. Just be aware that you could lose yourself for hours in the likes of Civilization or World of Warcraft! Sativas are best for playing video games. You’ll need to be alert, and possibly come up with a creative masterstroke to get the edge over your opponents.

Get out in nature

Getting the set and setting right when in the midst of a psychoactive experience is critical for feeling good. And what better place to be than out in nature. Weed puts you right in the moment and can make every little thing seem so incredibly interesting. So spending time in a natural environment can be the ideal time to enjoy this psychological state. There is always so much happening that we may miss in normal circumstances, when we don’t have that intense focus. And watching all the weird and wonderful things that may happen can be lots of fun, too.

If going outside, then you’ll need to ensure you don’t become sleepy and fatigued. An energizing sativa-dominant strain will likely have the best effects.

Final thoughts

Ultimately, you can do whatever you want when high. It should be a time when you get to relax and not worry about the hardships of life. With friends, weed can be lots of fun. On your own, cannabis use is great for introspection. Experimenting with different types of trips can also be fun. But only do this once you're more familiar with how weed affects you. Remember that marijuana is a psychoactive substance. This means it alters your perception of reality. However you choose to use cannabis, make sure that you stay safe and take precautions if necessary to prevent a bad trip.
