Anxiety busters: 10 high-CBD strains to ease your worries

Traditionally, anxiety sufferers have had mixed results with cannabis – some have found that psychoactive THC takes their mind off things, while others have experienced increased anxiety, and even paranoia, from consuming the herb.

But those with anxiety now have a trustier cannabis option to ease their symptoms: CBD. Strains that are high in non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD), produce an entirely different cannabis experience to standard strains. The reduced levels of THC mean you won’t feel euphoric from smoking – or otherwise consuming – a high-CBD strain, but you may find that it mellows you out and settles your mood. CBD is a potent anxiolytic, with an array of physical and mental therapeutic benefits.

With so much attention on CBD nowadays, growers are developing an entire new range of cannabis to satiate the non-intoxicating marijuana market. In this post, we’re going to look at 10 excellent high-CBD strains for combatting anxiety.

1) Canna-Tsu

Canna-Tsu is similar to Harle-Tsu (a strain mentioned further down) and is a cross between Sour Tsunami and Cannatonic. Thought of as a one-to-one strain, Canna-Tsu has roughly even amounts of THC and CBD, although unlike most “high-CBD” strains, it’s possible for the THC to exceed the THC here – you may feel some minor psychoactive sensations as a result.

This strain is a hybrid and provides relaxation and energization in equal amounts. Canna-Tsu won’t make you high in the sense that a recreational, high-THC strain would. Instead, you may feel jovial and uplifted after taking it, which complements the feelings of alertness offered from this earthy bud.

2) Cannatonic

One of the best-selling high-CBD strains, Cannatonic is very potent in CBD, with plants boasting a minimum CBD to THC ratio of 2:1. Relaxation is on the cards with this bud, which is a cross between G-13 and MK Ultra, two renowned indicas.

Cannatonic is typical of high-CBD strains in that it is mellowing and may have a positive effect on concentration. Under stressful scenarios, Cannatonic can help you perform at your best.

A standard Cannatonic strain has around 17 percent CBD to 6 percent THC – from there, the one-sidedness of the ratio only grows. The more CBD-dominant a strain is, the less pronounced the psychoactive properties of the THC are.

3) Stephen Hawking Kush

The CBD strain gene pool is more limited than that of high-THC strains, because they are still in relative infancy. So far, growers have just mixed strains to together to come up with new ones – Stephen Hawking Kush is such an example.

A cross of Sin City Kush and Harle-Tsu, Stephen Hawking Kush has a one-to-one cannabinoid profile of 5 percent CBD and THC. This strain offers the anti-anxiety properties of marijuana, without the THC overpowering and causing paranoia and anxious side effects. This strain is an indica, and its sedating qualities are suited to night-time use.

4) CBD Critical Cure

CBD Critical Cure is a crossbred of Critical Kush and a ruderalis cannabis strain and is indica-dominant. A new favorite among medical consumers, this strain from Barney’s Farm Seeds will dissolve your worries with just a few tokes.

CBD Critical Cure has a 2:1 CBD to THC ratio, meaning the psychoactive effects are significantly blunted. The cannabinoid profile of this strain tends to be around 11 percent CBD, 5 percent THC.

As an indica strain, CBD Critical Cure will give most users a moderate body high, which shows through its physically sedating effects. These calming properties are a good way of reducing tension and stress that has accumulated throughout the day – while CBD Critical Cure is suitable for daytime use, it’s perhaps more efficacious in the evening.

5) CBD OG Kush

Seasoned cannabis users will be familiar with OG Kush, a legendary strain in the community – now it’s back with a CBD twist. OG Kush earned its reputation from having whopping amounts of THC, but its CBD offspring is a hybrid with a much more nuanced one-to-one ratio.

CBD OG Kush is a simple high-CBD strain to cultivate, and its THC concentration could be anywhere from 5 to 10 percent. CBD levels are generally pretty consistent.

Kush strains are known for shutting the brain off, but you may find yourself surprisingly alert after taking some CBD OG Kush. The mellow energy that permeates through your body after using this strain is delightful and will give you the calming buzz needed to get you through the day.

6) Harlequin

With a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2, Harlequin is another high-CBD strain that produces only subtle psychoactivity, if it does so at all. A sativa-dominant strain, Harlequin energizes and increases focus as it ebbs away anxiety. These effects combine to deliver a mood boost, too.

Harlequin has a complex history, and its roots can be traced to many strains, originating from all over the planet. Landrace strains from Thailand, Switzerland, Nepal and Colombia have all played a role in the development of high-CBD Harlequin. CBD concentrations hover at around 15 percent in this strain, with THC levels reaching a maximum of 6 percent.

7) CBD MediHaze

A sativa-dominant hybrid, CBD MediHaze is yet another addition to the one-to-one range. You’ll find this strain in recreational and medical dispensaries up and down the country, and it always boasts about 9 percent each of the important CBD and THC compounds.

The terpenes in CBD MediHaze are earthy, and this can be picked up in both aroma and taste. Made by mixing Neville’s Haze with Super Silver Haze, this strain erodes mental fuzziness to leave you wide awake and alert. The focusing, yet calming properties of CBD MediHaze could make this the ideal strain for reducing social anxiety and public speaking anxiety.

ACDC is a spinoff of the well-known Cannatonic strain, except that it is much more potent in CBD than its maker, with ratios reaching almost 20:1 CBD to THC. Therefore, ACDC is a cannabis strain with a profile more like industrial hemp than marijuana – however, it is much richer in CBD than hemp. Some phenotypes of ACDC can produce up to 6 percent THC, but that’s no issue when CBD levels can nudge 24 percent.

Patients with severe anxiety disorders may find more relief with a strain like ACDC, as it’s more potent in CBD than even most high-CBD strains. With its profile, an ACDC experience won’t be psychoactive, making the anxiolytic effects of the CBD even more noticeable. ACDC makes a user focused, alert and clear-minded – just what’s needed during a long, tiring day.

9) Sour Tsunami

Sour Tsunami has a balanced ratio of CBD to THC and is regarded as a one-to-one strain. If anything, the CBD levels may slightly exceed those of the THC, but both average around 10 to 11 percent, making this a powerful strain.

Sour Tsunami is a cross of Sour Diesel and New York Sour Diesel and was a trailblazer for the high-CBD market. With THC percentages reaching double figures, expect to experience muted psychoactive effects from this strain – however, as it’s matched by the anti-psychotic CBD, you’ll never feel a loss of cognitive control.

10) Harle-Tsu

Harle-Tsu takes the best of Harlequin and Sour Tsunami and infuses it into a world-class high-CBD strain. With a much more lopsided CBD to THC ratio than other high-CBD strains, there is no potential for Harle-Tsu to get you even slightly high.

The majority of Harle-Tsu plant will have a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio, although the strain is known to have some phenotype variation – occasionally, you will find Harle-Tsu plants more akin to one-to-one strains.

However, in its 20:1 form, Harle-Tsu is the ideal strain for treating your anxiety. By shutting out its psychoactive properties, this flower will leave you clear-headed and better in tune with your surroundings. Some find that the strain makes them more productive by improving their concentration, while others report that it just makes them mellow. Whatever your exact reasons for use, it’s safe to say Harle-Tsu has endeared itself to daytime users.
